UK teens compete for trip to Nasa in rocket challenge

UK children started the next Space Race in a competition to launch rockets carrying eggs more than 800 feet in to the air.

Secondary school pupils from across the UK launched the model rockets into the sky in Leicestershire on Wednesday in a national contest.

Teams from 14 schools – made up of three to five members aged 11-18 – designed and built rockets to launch two eggs skywards and bring them back to ground unbroken with the help of a parachute.

The young rocket scientists were fighting for £1,000 prize money for their school and a trip to the home of space exploration, NASA in Houston as part of the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge (UKAYRoC).

This hilarious collection of toilets from around the world has become an internet sensation after they were posted on the blog Oddee.

The pick of the bunch are a set of obscure urinals which resemble coffins complete with a foot flush that are found in a restaurant toilet in Bogota, Colombia.

Having been introduced to the unusual activity of making art from pancake batter by his mother, Nathan Shileds has taken the craft to another level with his intricate designs of everything from sea creatures to famous landmarks.

The dad who lives in Saipan, the largest of the many small landmasses that make up the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, aims to make a different design a day and has begun showcasing his skills on his own blog as these pictures show.

The BBC has been accused of dumbing down the coverage of its Young Musician classical music competition for fear of appearing too middle class.

The final of the competition, which was broadcast on Sunday night on BBC2, was won by teenage cellist Laura van der Heijden.
